Simulacra
A solo show by Lucy Apfel
‘Simulacra’ navigates the blurred lines between image and illusion through the lens of French cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard’s 1981 Simulacra and Simulation writings. At its centre is Kate Moss - supermodel and cultural phenomenon who appears not just as the subject but also as the vessel for exploring representation, desire and authenticity in a society oversaturated with the image. The body of work consists of a digitally reproduced monotype on a neon pink mesh fabric. Monotype; an inherently paradoxical form of printmaking that resists easy replication. Each image is singular yet born of a process designed for reproduction, making it the ideal metaphor for the themes of simulacra.
